About the Role

Wellington Free Ambulance is seeking an experienced leader to head our Clinical Communications Centre. In this pivotal role, you will provide both strategic and operational leadership across emergency call taking, clinical triage, and dispatch function - ensuring safe, timely, and high‑quality responses that meet contracted service levels.

You will drive the development of policies, quality improvement initiatives, and workforce capability, while ensuring equitable and clinically appropriate access to pre‑hospital emergency care. Your leadership will help maintain alignment with sector standards, regulatory requirements, and WFA’s commitment to exceptional patient care

Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the day‑to‑day and strategic management of the Clinical Communications Centre, ensuring contracted service levels are consistently met and access to pre‑hospital emergency care remains fair and equitable
  • Oversee the Clinical Communications Centre capability, ensuring the safe, efficient, and clinically appropriate dispatch and coordination of ambulance resources.
  • Lead the ongoing development of extended virtual care by providing operational management support to ensure the delivery of the highest quality patient care from the Clinical Hub in the Clinical Communications Centre.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain robust procedures that support best‑practice deployment, patient and staff safety, and equitable access to emergency care
  • Drive quality improvement and service development initiatives that enhance core clinical measures and overall system performance

Desired Skills and Experience

You’re an accomplished operational leader with more than a decade of experience guiding high‑performing teams and delivering results in complex, fast‑moving environments. You understand the New Zealand healthcare sector and know how to build strong, trusted relationships.

Clear communication is one of your strengths - whether you’re influencing stakeholders, supporting staff, or shaping service improvements. You’re confident working with technology and systems, and you’re comfortable driving change that enhances performance and patient outcomes.

Desirable Experience:

  • Working within ambulance or emergency services communications/control centre environments
  • Familiarity with sector standard NZS 8156:2019
  • Previous ambulance communications centre experience
  • Previous ambulance clinical experience
